Wayne Guffy

Wayne Sluder Guffy, Sr. was born on October 30, 1922 at the family farm home in the Fish Hatchery community to James and Jessie Sluder Guffy. He died on April 11, 2016 at 93 years of age in Alva after an extended illness.
He attended grade school at Wide Awake District #36 in the Fish Hatchery area and attended high school at Byron, graduating at the top of his class in 1942.
Wayne worked on the family farm until he joined the US Navy on November 12, 1943. He was a Fire Controlman on the USS Andromeda, AKA-15 for thirty-one months during WWII. He served in both the Atlantic and the Pacific theaters of war. Wayne made the invasions of Sicily and Salerno, the invasion of Southern France and the invasion of Okinawa. Second Class Petty Officer Guffy was discharged from the US Navy on October 28, 1945 at Norman, Oklahoma.
Wayne returned to the Byron community after his discharge. He rented, and then purchased a 160 acre farm from his parents and 80 acres from his mother southeast of Byron. He has added more acreage to his farming operation since. Wayne married Lois Louella Caywood, daughter of Orville D. and Banna Georgia Caywood of Sand Creek in Grant County, Oklahoma on November 22, 1947 at Van Buren, Arkansas.
Wayne custom swathed and baled hay for hire for many years for local farmers. For seven winters, he worked in the oil field. He pumped sand at Kirkpatrick's Sand and Gravel during the winter for two years. Wayne fully retired at the age of 92.
Wayne and Lois raised their twelve children and helped raise several grandchildren on their Byron farm. He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Dwayne, who died in a car accident in 1972. Their living children are: Connie O'neal Park of Bartlesville; Wayne S. Guffy Jr. of Lawton, currently supporting the military in Bagram, Afghanistan; April Yvonne Freeman of Houston, Texas; James Martin of Byron; Susan Denise Tyrrell of Kansas City, Missouri; Karen Dianne Mitchener of Jones; Kathy Delene Hasiak of Castle Rock, Colorado; David Dwight of Ft. Knox, Kentucky; Jonny Darren of Byron; Owen Terry of Dalhart, Texas; Charles "Mark" of Byron and Kent Gregory of Tampa, Florida. They have over 100 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
No one was more proud of his children and grandchildren than Wayne. Wayne was a workaholic and provided well for his family. He taught his children honesty, integrity, a strong work ethic and independence.
Wayne and Lois celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on November 22, 2015. They lived on the original farm property their entire married life. Wayne was an upstanding member of the community, serving on the school board and cemetery board for many years. He was always willing to lend a hand to neighbors. Travel was an activity Wayne enjoyed, and he has driven many miles from coast to coast and north to south across the United States and also internationally. In his latter years, Wayne enjoyed spending time at the Senior Citizen Center playing pool and dominoes with lifetime friends.
Wayne will be missed by his large family and many friends.
Funeral service for Wayne will be at Driftwood Christian Church on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Byron-Amorita Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Cherokee. Viewing will be Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. www.lanmanmemorials.com
