Aline-Funeral service for Virgil Brown Irwin will be Friday, May 24, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at First Christian Church in Aline with Pastor Polly Young officiating. Burial will follow at Aline Star Cemetery in Aline. Viewing will be Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with the family present from 7:00 until 9:00.
Virgil was born on August 29, 1916 in Aline to Fred Grady Irwin and Etta Isabelle Brown Irwin and passed from this life on May 21, 2013 at his home in Aline. Virgil lived in this area his entire life. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, being in combat for 513 days in the European Campaign. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and received the following medals: a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal, American Defense Service Ribbon, EAME Service Ribbon, One Silver Service Star, One Bronze Star and one Bronze Arrowhead. Virgil married Ila Maxine Thomas on January 4, 1943 and to this union three children were born, Larry, Joetta and Steve. He was a member of the Aline Christian Church, the Kiner-Ryel American Legion Post, the American Angus Association, the Quarter Horse Association and the Aline Chamber of Commerce. He started making soup for the Fall Fair in 1946 and continued for many years. He was a Boy Scout Leader for many years and a strong supporter of 4-H and FFA.
Survivors include Virgil’s children, Joetta Jackson and husband, Rick of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Steve Irwin and wife, Lori of Aline; daugter-in-law, Pat Irwin of Aline; grandchildren, Kevin Cy and wife, Katie, Kim Beam and husband, Buck, Kristie Robinson and husband, Scott, Amanda Budimlya and husband, Josh, Jamin Jackson, Amber Bhatt and husband, Sam, Stefanie Dixon and husband, Kevin, Mike Irwin and wife, Richele and Jeff Irwin; great grandchildren, Joshua, Paige, Kassie, Jake, Kristopher, Allyson “Ally”, Alexis, Emma, Ryker, Kelsey, Jordan, Irelinde, Isabella “Izzy”, Liam, Tell, Teton and Brandon.
Those who preceded Virgil in death include, his wife, Ila; son, Larry Cy; his parents; siblings, Ollie Fred Irwin, Wanda Moser, Clyde Irwin, Audrea Mae King and Jimmie Irwin.
Memorials may be given to Aline Christian Church, Aline Fire Department or Aline Senior Center through the funeral home.
