KIOWA-Monty B. Williams, 53, of Kiowa, Kansas passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2014. A celebration of his life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4, 2014 in the South Barber High School Gymnasium officiated by Royce Vogt. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery near Kiowa.
Monty was born June 22, 1961 in Kiowa, Kansas to Lonnie R. and Beverly (Curran) Williams. He graduated from South Barber High School with the Class of 1979. On May 10, 1986, he and Cindra Cox were united in marriage. To this union three children were born: Kody, Shelby and Casey. Monty worked in the agricultural industry for numerous years and with the help of Cindra and the children, he successfully built Williams Ag from the ground up. Monty loved Kiowa and showcased that love by being actively involved in all aspects of the community. He was a charter member of the Grace Bible Fellowship Church where he helped build a thriving congregation and served as an elder. Additionally, Monty served as a volunteer fireman since 1979, a member of the Midian Shriners, was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, volunteered as an EMT with the Barber County Ambulance Service and earned the South Barber FFA Honorary Chapter Degree. Additionally and notably, he also served for a number of years as the official Easter bike race starter! Monty could always be found helping out at Spicer Auction and Real Estate and often said that over the past 40 years, helping his longtime friend, Sam, was the job he never got paid to do! Monty was a cook deluxe, a passion that began by learning to make jelly with Cora McGee. This passion continued throughout his life and you could often find him at the Plum Thickett or catering a meal for many special occasions and he was always at the park on Labor Day as an official "Beaner". He also loved to sing and often was a member in barbershop quartets throughout the years! Monty was a big man with an even bigger heart. That big heart along with his love of people naturally led him to be everyone's "go-to" guy. He thoroughly enjoyed being a helping hand to anyone who needed one and often times took it upon himself to help before anyone else knew help was needed. He was the consummate organizer and always loved to be in charge. Monty thrived on being a role model and leader to youth in the community and enjoyed helping them find positive pathways for their lives. Monty was a loving father, husband and friend to all. His generous heart, stern hands, leadership and compassion for this community will be greatly missed. In a testament to his organizational skills, Monty planned to continue to help others posthumously through organ donation.
Monty is survived by his wife of 28 years, Cindra; three children, Kody Williams, Shelby Nielsen and husband, Brian, and Casey Williams all of Kiowa, Kansas; mother, Beverly Williams; one brother, Marty Williams; in-laws, Joe and Wanda Cox as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends!
He was preceded in death by his father, Lonnie R. Williams; grandparents, Lonnie B. and Lottie Williams and Orville and Mildred Curran.
