Mary Watkins

February 8, 1925 — September 4, 2014

KIOWA, KANSAS-Mary Ellen (Brady) Watkins went to be with her beloved Lord and Savior September 4, 2014. She was born to Ralph and Myrtle Brady on February 8, 1925, east of Alva in the Ashley community. She graduated from Lambert High School in 1943. On March 24, 1944, she married Bill Watkins. To this marriage, three children were born: Monte, Kay and Brad. Mary Ellen opened the Kut & Kurl Beauty Shop in Kiowa since 1972. She was still doing hair at the age of 89. Mary Ellen was a resident of Kiowa, Kansas for 66 years. She was a member of the Kiowa Methodist Church and was a 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary #146. Mary Ellen was a devoted wife, mother, Memo, Aunt Bobbie, and faithful friend. Living her life to serve, she enjoyed making homemade ice cream, peanut brittle, and cream puffs for others to enjoy.

Surviving Mary Ellen keeping her memory alive are grandchildren; Marci Hyde of Burlington, Oklahoma, Jason Watkins (Sheila) of Enid, Oklahoma, Holly Adams (JR) of Rose Hill, Kansas, Leigha Becker (Wade) of Bonner Springs, Kansas, Megan Olson (Kenny) of Paola, Kansas, Ali Wiley, (Jeff) of Rose Hill, Kansas, Kristan Bode (Chad) of Hutchinson, Kansas; son-in-law, Gary Wiley of Andover, Kansas; daughters-in law, Cheryl Newell of Vernon, Texas and Pam Watkins of Hutchinson, Kansas. She will also be missed by her brothers; Larry Brady (Nelda) of Hugoton, Kansas, Ronald Brady (Barbara) of Alva, Oklahoma; brother-in-law, John Watkins (Jane) of Wichita, Kansas; sisters-in-law, Vesta Watkins of El Dorado, Kansas, Ginger Cook (James) of El Dorado, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Bayli Hyde, Kelsey, Kalley and Kolton Watkins, Ashley and Max Adams, Blaine and Knox Becker, Maddie and Sadie Olson, Kreed Downing, and Caelie Agnew; great-great-grandchildren, Rylie and Tre Adams.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; children, Monte Watkins, Kay Wiley, and Brad Watkins; three sisters, Maxine Pederson, Vera Mae Smith, Gayle Jones, and grandson, Robert Hyde.

Funeral service will be Monday, September 8, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Kiowa United Methodist Church with Pastor Keith Fink officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00p.m. with the family present from 4:00-6:00 to receive friends.
