Lynn Dean “Red” Sturgeon was born on the family farm one mile south of Helena, OK, on Sept. 14, 1930. He was the third child born to Lawrence Olin “L.O.” or “Olie” and Goldia Pearl Rockwell Sturgeon. As a child he attended Prairie View “Toothpick” School and later Helena Public School graduating in 1948. He attended the First Christian Church in Helena and accepted Jesus as his Lord as a young boy. On November 18, 1951, Red married his high school sweetheart, Kathryn Miller. To this union were born two children, Suzanne and Lon.
Red’s first job was working for Cliff Austin equipment in Helena. During the early years Red and Kathy moved several times and worked in several occupations. Red eventually came back to the equipment business working for F.W. Zaloudek in Kremlin. After working for Zaloudek’s for a few years, he made the decision to start his own business in tractor sales and parts. In 1963 he purchased a portion of his father’s farm at the corner of highways 45 and 58 and Sturgeon’s Corner was born.
Red and Kathy worked hard to build the business. In addition to the Corner, Red also farmed, raising cattle and wheat. While Sturgeon’s Corner and farming were always a mainstay, Red and Kathy explored other ventures throughout the years, owning at various times the town concrete business, the propane business, a small grocery store at the Corner, the Crazy Horse Quick Shop and part owners of the John Deere dealership.
Family and community were important to Red. He had frequent praise for his “German girl” Kathy and taught his children the importance of family, the value of hard work and how to act on opportunities to quietly assist others. He was an avid supporter of the community both as a whole and the individuals within the community. Red always acknowledged the goodness of our Lord and the many blessings He had bestowed.
Red went home to be with his Lord on Jan. 25, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and brothers, Lawrence Rockwell and Jackie Wayne.
He is survived by his children, Suzanne and Lon (Ginger); grandchildren, Brittany Fowler (Matt), Haley Burchfield (Heath), Carson Sturgeon and Carissa Huffman (Tyler) and great-grandchildren Brooks, Chandler, Matilyn and Charlotte Fowler and Willow and Weston Burchfield.
