Lloyd Tidwell

Lloyd’s parents moved to Kiowa from the Faulkner Area north of Cora and Teagarden, Oklahoma in February 1922. He was born on June 21, 1922 west of Kiowa on a farm by the little Mule Creek. He was the third son born to Lawrence and Helen Tidwell. He passed away at the Kiowa Manor on April 16, 2017, at the age of 94. He attended school in Kiowa.
He lived west of Kiowa on a Blackstock farm until the fall of 1942. His Dad died that May and it was in the contract that the family had to move if the dad died. So the family moved to the Baker place west of town, and in the fall they moved into town to the Botkins place. Lloyd helped his family as a farmer and rancher. He was a runner in high school with his brothers, Jack and Dewey. He even helped them make the state track meet. But on the weekends he enjoyed going to a rodeo to calf-rope. He loved his horses and roping.

The end of December in 1942 he was called to the Army. Roy Taylor and Lloyd took their basic training at Camp Barkley in Abilene, Texas. Then in April he was sent to Fort Lewis at Tacoma, Washington.

Lloyd worked for Elmer Alberding June 1943-1947. Then Lloyd worked for George Zimmerman for 31 years beginning in June 1947. For several more years Lloyd continued working for George and IdaBelle Michel. He really enjoyed riding his horse and roping calves to be worked. He also farmed and was quite the mechanic. He built a silage loader, a tracking plow and invented other tools. During these years he helped build a bridge, an elevator and laid brick on the main street of Kiowa.

Lloyd was a provider for his mother since she did not drive. He worked hard to help his brothers and his sister after his dad died. He was a great teacher and helper to his nephews and nieces. He especially enjoyed small children.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lonnie Tidwell and wife, Betty, Dewey Tidwell and wife, Betty and Jack Tidwell and wife, Gladys and a brother-in-law, Albert Harbaugh.

He is survived by one sister, Helen Harbaugh; one brother, Bill Tidwell and his wife, Cathy; several nephews and nieces.

Memorials may be made to the Barber County Fair or the Kiowa Manor through the funeral home. Funeral service for Lloyd will be Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Kiowa United Methodist Church.
