Laura was born August 22, 1943 in Cherokee to Walter Butler and Clytice Puffinbarger Butler and passed from this life on February 18, 2019 in Oklahoma City. She grew up in the Byron area and graduated from Byron-Driftwood High School. In 1961 she married Joe Ryel and they made their home in Oklahoma City where she attended beauty college. Following beauty college Laura and Joe moved back to the Alfalfa County area where they raised their children, Terry, Tamara and Timothy.
Laura owned and operated Laura’s Beauty Shop in Cherokee until the family moved to a farm southeast of Burlington. She was a vital part of the family’s custom harvesting business. She also owned and operated H and R Block in Alva. Joe and Laura retired and moved to Cherokee in 2009. Laura was devoted to taking care of her family and loved spending time with them.
Preceding her in death include her son, Timothy Ryel; brother, Louis Butler; parents, Walter and Clytice Butler.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Ryel; children, Terry Ryel and wife, Sandra, Tamara Goeken and husband, Gary; grandchildren, Shelby Bates and husband, Jared, Sadie Cockrum and husband, Stephen, Jacob Goeken, Alison Gustus and husband, Brian; great-grandchildren, Adler, Hazen and Kelton Bates, Stanten and Sawyer Cockrum and Carter Gustus.
Funeral service for Laura will be Friday, February 22, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Cherokee First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Cherokee. Viewing will be Thursday at the funeral home in Cherokee from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. www.lanmanmemorials.com Facebook: Lanman Funeral Home Inc.
