HARDTNER-Joseph Harrison Rader passed away on August 12, 2014 at the age of 95 years and 10 days at the Kiowa Hospital District Manor. A celebration of his life service will be held on Friday, August 15, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hardtner United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Hardtner-Elwood Cemetery.
Joe was born on a farm in Woods County, Oklahoma on August 2, 1919 to Joseph Glen and Gertrude Ellen Miller Rader. In 1929, Gertrude died following childbirth and Joe was put into the orphan's home in Helena, Oklahoma. After a period of six months, he was placed in a foster home with Emmet Abell and family. He lived in their home for three years, he then lived with his father in Isabel, Kansas for two years. They moved back to rural Woods County, Oklahoma two weeks before the end of the school year. Joe had to take the Oklahoma History exam to graduate from the 8th grade. So, he read the book, took the test at the superintendents office in Alva, and made the highest grade in Woods County. They lived across from Ed McGarry's farm and he attended the Fairview School and finished grade school. Then Joe drove to Hardtner to attend the Hardtner High School as a freshman and started his sophomore years before stopping to enter the CCC. After entering the Civilian Conservation Corps on October 1, 1936, Joe was stationed at Las Cruses, New Mexico. On October 2, 1940 Joe married Leona Maxine Harrington at the Alva Methodist Church in Alva, Oklahoma. Following the wedding he worked as a farm laborer and drove the school bus for Capron, Oklahoma and later for the Alva school systems. Joe and Maxine had two children; Wesley Eugene, born September 20, 1941 and Joyce Nadine, born October 2, 1944. In July 1948 the family moved to Hardtner, Kansas where Joe worked for the W.E. Sheddy Grain Company and ran the Deluxe Theatre in Hardtner. On January 1, 1951 Joe went to work for the Elwood Township maintaining it's roads and remained with them until he retired on August 1, 1984. During this period of time, he served 6 years on the Hardtner City Council, 4 years as Mayor and also served on the Hardtner-Elwood Volunteer Fire Department. In the Rader family, there came to be a family tradition called Monday Family night. All five grandchildren came to Joe and Maxine's home after school. They would do chores with grandpa and when evening came, the whole family gathered and ate supper together. This was a sharing time of Maxine's wonderful home cooking and also a sharing time of the days' events. Much of the time, there were several conversations taking place as everyone talked about their day. The grandchildren talk about those good times still today.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years; Leona Maxine Rader; foster son, Donald Myers; parents; three sisters, Betty Sharp, Lorene Smith, Thelma Hada; three brothers, Glen Rader, Jr., Bobby Rader and Marvin Rader.
Those left to cherish his memory are his son and wife; Wesley and Sandi Rader; his daughter and husband, Joyce and Larry W. McCarty; six grandchildren, Michael E. and Sheila Rader, Michelle D. and Shan Hanes, Debra E. and Rod Wiens, Dr. Dan E. and Dr. Andrea McCarty, and Duane McCarty. His is also survived by his twelve great grandchildren, M'Cheila, Traegor and Brenika Rader, Shayden, Shaybree and Shaylynn Hanes, Grabrielle and Grace Wiens, Jason and Jacob McCarty and Paige and Dylan McCarty; two sisters, Bonnie Martin and Virginia Mixon many nieces, nephews and other relatives as well as a host of friends.
He will be fondly remembered as a terrific husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who always made time to laugh with and care for his family.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 14, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Kiowa District Hospital or Hardtner United Methodist Church kitchen fund and given to Lanman Funeral Home P.O. Box 42 Kiowa, Kansas.
