Cherokee-Funeral service for James “Jim” Robert Cotton,Jr. 53, Saturday, June 1, 2013 10:00 a.m. at First Christian Church in Cherokee. Burial will follow at Cherokee Municipal Cemetery. Viewing will be Thursday 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Friday 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family 6:00 until 8:00.
Jim was born on October 9, 1959 in Edinburg, Texas to James Robert Cotton and Herlinda Martinez Cotton and passed from this life on May 27, 2013 in Cherokee. He married Tammy Warren on November 30, 2005. He served in the U.S. Navy in 1978. Jim retired as a security supervisor with Saudi Aramco before moving to Cherokee three years ago. After arriving in Cherokee he substitute taught at Cherokee Schools, worked for Cherokee Publishing for a short time and was currently Data Registrar at Cherokee High School. Among his volunteer activities, Jim was a DHS volunteer, taught Jr. Achievement in Houston and was a member of Community Emergency Response Team. Jim was an honorary member of Farmerettes Joy Group and Beta Sigma Phi. His pastimes included photography, camping and astronomy. He was a big fan of Batman and Big Foot. He attended First Christian Church in Cherokee and worked with Tammy in the nursery. He enjoyed all of the kids at school and was a major Cherokee Chief fan. Among the most loved kids were Jim’s grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy Cotton of Cherokee; his children, Melanie Claborn and husband, Joe of Springdale, Arkansas, Thomas Wessels of Cherokee, Sarah Mikawa, Korey Purcell, Tiffany Lopez, all of Texas; four grandchildren, Porter and Ada Claborn and Brittney and A.J. Villanueva; his mother, Linda Cotton of Houston, Texas; his brother, Tom Cotton of Sugarland, Texas and his noble dog, Lola.
Memorials may be given to First Christian Church nursery through the funeral home.
