KIOWA-Alfred Lloyd "Jake" Jacobs was born March 27, 1925 in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma to Arthur E. and Anna L. Rader Jacobs. He passed away April 17, 2014 at the age of 89 years and 20 days. Funeral service will be Monday, April 21, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Kiowa Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery.
Jake attended Glendale rural school through the 8th grade and graduated from Kiowa High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946 in the 3159th Signal Service Battalion in the Philippines and Japan. Upon returning from the service he worked with his father at Jacobs Implement Company. On November 24, 1950 he and Norma Jean James were united in marriage at the First Christian Church in Alva, Oklahoma. They were the first couple married in this church. Unto this marriage three children were born, Lois, Jim and Gary. He worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from 1953 until his retirement in 1986. He and brother in-law, Alvin Herren also owned and operated J&R Electric company from 1958 to 1966. He was a member of Cosmos Masonic Lodge #278, the VFW, American Legion and Congregational United Church of Christ. His hobbies included radio controlled airplanes and Amateur Radio. For many years he enjoyed being the head set builder for Border Line Theatre. In 2010 he participated in the Honor Flight visiting the WWII memorial in Washington D.C. He always seemed to have some kind of project he was working on when he wasn't helping someone else. He was an avid sports fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Kathryn Buckley; one bother, Harold and daughter, Lois Jean Hamm.
He is survived by his wife, Norma; sons Jim and wife, Jill of Capron, Oklahoma, Gary and wife, Connie of Kiowa; seven grandchildren; Faun and husband, John Goodwin, Jacob Hamm and Alexia Deal, Dabria and husband, Bryson VanGieson, Corey Hamm, Kyle Jacobs and wife, Lacie, Christopher and Caitlin Jacobs; great grandchildren Madison and Olivia Hamm, Gunnar Goodwin, and Abel VanGieson; one sister, Stella Brotherton and one brother, Eldon Jacobs, many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Memorials may be made to the United Congregational Church of Christ or Kiowa District Hospital and given to the funeral home.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 19, 2014 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm with the family present to receive friends from 10:00 am to noon.
