Howard “Lynn” Hargett age 87, a long-time resident of Kiowa, Kansas, passed away on May 17, 2021 at the Kiowa District Hospital Manor after a long illness due to Parkinson’s Disease. He was born October 8, 1933 on the farm in Gray County, Kansas to Howard L. Hargett and Hazel Ullom Hargett. He was the oldest of three siblings. He graduated from Bucklin High School in Bucklin, Kansas and married his high school sweetheart, Gerva Powers, on August 3, 1952. From this union, four children were born. Lynn worked for many years as employee, bookkeeper at several Farmer Cooperative Elevators in Kansas and Burlington, Oklahoma. In 1971 he moved his family to Kiowa, Kansas where he became employed at Coontz Manufacturing and Implement, traveling as a sales representative selling the popular “Coontz Blades” some of which are still in use. He had his own Insurance Agency in Kiowa for a time. Lynn and Gerva were in the restaurant business in the late 1970s, when they owned and operated the Kiowa Social Club. They moved from Kiowa for a few years and decided to return to Kiowa to be near family. Lynn was talented and very particular about the quality of work that he did. He did small jobs for customers, that the bigger contractors did not want to take on. He and Gerva did many carpentry and painting jobs together for as long as their health permitted. In October of 2015 both Lynn and Gerva entered the Kiowa District Hospital Manor after their health had declined. Lynn had to learn to live without Gerva after her death just three weeks after they made the Kiowa Manor their home. He resided there until his death.
