Hazel Coontz

June 9, 1928 — February 11, 2014

Hazel was born on June 9, 1928 in Alva to Clarence Phillips and Beulah Cropp Phillips and passed from this life on February 11, 2014 in Enid. Hazel graduated from Alva High School in 1948. She married John Coontz on May 14, 1949 in Alva. To this union were born Larry, Glenda, Nancy and Carolyn. They lived in Cherokee until 1955, when they moved to Kiowa, Kansas. John owned a farm implement store in Kiowa for several years. Hazel loved her children and did not work outside of the home until her children were grown. Hazel worked at the Kiowa Manor as a CNA for a couple of years. In 1986 John and Hazel moved to Cherokee, Oklahoma. Hazel worked as a home health care aid for individuals. She was a very dedicated wife and mother. She was a very loving and caring woman and put others needs before her own. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Cherokee.

Hazel is survived by her four children, Larry and Janet Coontz of Lahoma and their children, Scott and Sheila Coontz and Rusty and Patricia Ledford; Glenda Moore of Enid and her children, Kayla and Mark Sahl and Brett and Shauna Priest, Nancy Coontz of Enid and Carolyn and Byron Mathis of Cherokee and their children, Steven and Angie Mathis, Stacey Mathis and Robert and Jamie Waggoner; thirteen great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; many relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; five brothers and three sisters. Funeral service for Hazel will be Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. at Cherokee First Christian Church with Rev. Tom Stanley officiating. Burial will follow at Cherokee Municipal Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given to Cherokee Ministerial Alliance through the funeral home.
