Mass of Christian Burial for Eleanor F. (Ciskowski) Arterburn, 94, a resident of Medford, OK will be at 10:00 am Thursday, August 15, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Medford. The Rev. Carl Janocha will officiate. She will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Calvary Cemetery, Medford, under the direction of Lanman Funeral Home Inc. of Medford. Rosary and Memorial Service will be Wednesday, August 14th, at 7:00 pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Eleanor was born August 1, 1919 at the home near Clyde, OK, to Anthony and Hendricka (Hulshof) Ciskowski and passed from this life on Sunday, August 11, 2013 in Medford Servant Living Center.
Eleanor attended elementary school at Valley Center District 56 and then Clyde Elementary School where she was Valedictorian of the 8th grade. She graduated from Medford High School in1936 where she was Homecoming Queen. She attended beauty school in Wichita, KS, returning to Medford to open her first shop in the back of the old First National Bank building, later moving to the Franklin Hotel. She moved to California in 1942 working at Lockheed Aircraft Company. She joined the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) and was stationed at Palm Springs, CA. While in California, she met many movie stars such as Clark Gable, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Rita Hayworth, and Spencer Tracy. While in Hollywood, she and her friends would spend time at the Hollywood Canteen dancing with the soldiers before they left for war while the movie stars waited tables. She moved back to Oklahoma after the war.
Eleanor married James Douglas Arterburn on June 2, 1949. They were the first couple to exchange vows in the newly built St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Medford. Eleanor owned the Medford Fashion Shop while continuing her career as a beautician. She helped her husband build five houses and went all the way to Montana on the harvest in the summers. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was a life-time advocate for Pro-life. Eleanor was known for her acts of kindness whether it be taking food to the ill, helping host showers, or working in the Church. She was known for attending every shower, wedding, or funeral.
Eleanor is survived by her children, Peggy Cooper & husband Chip of Bristow, OK; son-in-law Albert Taber of Bixby, OK; Bob Arterburn & wife Jan of Wichita, KS; Karen Junghanns & husband Carter of Jenks, OK; Joan Kretchmar & husband Randy; Lisa Skrdla; Cindy Pratt & husband Ronny; all of Medford; sister, Albina Ronck of Enid, OK; 27 grandchildren, Cadee, Andee & Kellee Cooper, Nat & Leah Cooper, Chad & Shea Taber, Melanie & Todd Watters, Troy & Darcy Taber, Aaron Arterburn, Carta & Heath Farrill, Quincee & Jason Smith, Logan & Kassie Junghanns, Tyler, Trevor, & Taylor Kretchmar, Laura & Justin Skrdla, Cody & Jalynne Pratt, Jesse & Cole Pratt, and 25 great-grandchildren; Tristan, Ethan, Sam, Ben & Jon Montgomery, Kannon Cooper, Nora Cooper, Kendall, Trent, Jordan, James, & Clara Taber, Braxton, Dreyson, Kylan & London Watters, Hayden & Hunter Fulkerson, Sydney & Kori Smith, Kaylee, Carter & Baby Junghanns, Payten Pratt, & Mason Walker, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Eleanor is preceded in death by her husband, Jim in 1994; her daughter, Barbara Taber in 2012; her parents, Anthony & Hendricka Ciskowski; sister, Emily Hodges; brothers, Bennie, Herman, Willard, & Tony Ciskowski. Eleanor was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend to many, and loved by all.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to St Mary Building Fund or St Mary Calvary Cemetery.
