E.L. Metcalf

JET - Emery Lemuel Metcalf, Jr. (E.L.) went to be with his Lord on March 10, 2015, ten days after having suffered a stroke. E.L. was born on June 8, 1926, to father, Emery Lemuel Metcalf and mother, Jesse Emily Lemmon. He was born in the very home in which he was to spend the rest of his life. On November 15, 1947, he married Betty Jo Jordan of Jet. They entered sixty seven wonderful years together of farming, ranching and family life on the Metcalf home place. Services will be held at the United Methodist Church of Jet on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Timberlake Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Helena. E.L. and Betty's family life always centered around their Christian faith. One way E.L. demonstrated his love for Jesus was his devotion to church and the body of Christ. Through the years, he served as youth leader, board member, board of trustees member, and teacher. He coordinated the ministry of the Wild Wood Chapel at the Salt Plains Lake for 32 years.

E.L. served many needs of the community for over fifty years, devoting many volunteer hours to bring to the community such projects as the Jet swimming pool, tennis courts, Jet Memorial Park and Prairie Grass Project. He served faithfully in offices of the Lions Club, the Farmers Coop Board and was the Community Blood Drive Chairman for 20 years. In 2008, E.L. was the recipient of the KanOkla Community Service Award, which acknowledged his significant contributions to the life of his community. He was also on the committee that received special recognition from the State Chamber of Commerce for community involvement.

E.L was always fascinated with flying and became a pilot at age 65. He loved flying his Kitfox plane, which he co-built with his son. He also loved improving and caring for his beloved home place, securing the official state bestowed title "Centennial Homestead" in 1993.

His tireless commitment to work on the farm and service to his church and community pale however to the fervor and depth of love he gave to his wife, his children, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His deep love for His Savior, Jesus Christ, gave him compassion and a sincerity of concern for each person in his family that touched their lives deeply at each encounter with him. He thought about them carefully, prayed for them diligently, served them unselfishly, gave to them generously, inspired them endlessly and left them with a legacy of truth, integrity, faith and hope.

E.L. is predeceased by his mother and father, Emery and Jesse Metcalf, brothers and their wives Dale and Mabel Metcalf, Earl and Francis Metcalf, and Ivan and Florene Metcalf. He was also preceded in death by his sons-in-laws Monty Rice and Layne Zander.

He is survived by a brother, Donald and his wife, Florence Metcalf, and a sister, Jessie Mary and her husband, Cecil Reinhart all of Jet. He is also survived by his wife, Betty, of Jet, daughter, Diana Telg and husband, Russell of Houston, daughter, Tammie Rice of Oklahoma City, son, Kim and daughter-in-law, Kimberly of Nash, daughter Terri Zander of Enid; grandchildren Blair and wife, Dana Telg of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Matt and wife, MaryAnne Rice of Edmond, Blake Telg of Houston, Tai and husband, Matt Crabtree of Enid, Kaleb and wife, Andrea Metcalf of Enid, Aaron and wife, Brooke Rice of Oklahoma City, Max and wife, Emma Metcalf of Stillwater, Isaac Rice of Oklahoma City, Addie and Anna Zander of Enid; great-grandchildren, Emily Crabtree of Enid, Chapel and Wright Telg of Ft. Smith, Luke, Henry and Macy Rice of Edmond, Emery Metcalf, his namesake, of Enid.
