Douglas Mcmurtrey

Douglas Lee McMurtrey was born on August 27, 1965, in Cherokee, Oklahoma, to Ronal and Marguerite McMurtrey. Doug passed away on March 19, 2019, at the age of 53 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, after complications from flu and pneumonia. A member of the Class of 1983, Doug graduated from Cherokee High School where he was active in 4-H, FFA (earning State Farmer and American Farmer honors), band, basketball, and First Baptist Church youth. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy in 1987 and married Dawn Burlie on September 3, 1994, in Wakita, Oklahoma. Doug and Dawn made their home on their farm west of Cherokee.

The fourth generation to farm the land, working the farm his great-grandfather Harry homesteaded in the Land Run of 1893 brought great joy to Doug.  Doug farmed and ranched with his Dad throughout high school and after college and for the past ten years with his nephew Curtis. Pioneers of no-till farming, they raised wheat, alfalfa, sesame, soybeans, milo, and canola as well as cover crops to improve the soil. Doug and Dawn also operated a cow/calf herd of Commercial and Angus cattle.

A faithful servant and life-long member of First Baptist Church of Cherokee, Doug served in several capacities within the church. He was a member/past president of the Board of Directors of Alfalfa Electric Cooperative and past member of the Board of Directors of Alfalfa County Soil Conservation District and Alfalfa County Fair Board. Doug was named a 2012 Master Agronomist by OSU’s Division of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources.

Doug is preceded in death by his grandparents, Wentz and Inis McMurtrey of Cherokee and Glen and Adeline Gower of Helena; as well as one aunt and two uncles.

Surviving are Doug’s wife, Dawn McMurtrey of Cherokee; parents, Ronal and Marguerite McMurtrey of Cherokee; sister, Rhonda McMurtrey and husband, Rob Carter of Oklahoma City; sister, Brenda McMahan and husband, Kent of Divide, Colorado; niece, Megan Rice and husband, Tyler; nephew, Curtis McMahan and wife, Blythe; great-nieces, Autumn, Ava and Ellie McMahan all of Cherokee; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Eldon and Sherill Burlie of Wakita; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Todd and Rena Burlie and nephews, TJ, Dalton, and Brennan Burlie, all of Ponca City.

Memorial service for Doug will be Saturday, March 23, 2019 will be at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Cherokee with interment at Auburn Cemetery west of Cherokee. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Cherokee Youth Group or Boys Ranch Town (a division of Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children) through the funeral home.
