Aline-Funeral service for Donald L. Newman, 76, will be Friday, June 21, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Aline Christian Church.
Donald Lee Newman was born in Winfield, Kansas on August 8, 1936 to Effie Louise Thomas Newman and Ivan Clayton Newman. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy in 1955. He served on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was discharged in 1959.
He attended San Diego State University in California where he graduated with a BA in education in 1963. Later he went to Southeastern Oklahoma State University where he earned his Masters of Education in 1969. Don also attended the University of Oklahoma to obtain his special education certification. He was a teacher and administrator in California and Oklahoma for a total of forty years.
Don not only attended school once he was out of the Navy, he also married Thelma Lois Forbus. They quickly had four children: Richard (Rick) Ellis in April of 1960, Rick passed away in 2007, Steven Boyd in October of 1961, Alicia Janell in February of 1965 and Clayton Scott in July of 1966. Janell died in October of 1967 from cancer. In 1968 Don and Lois adopted their daughter, Shannon Louise. They divorced in 1976.
Don and Judy married in 1988. They enjoyed gardening and playing duplicate bridge. Don had a love of growing things that came from his parents. He reached the rank of Life Master in Duplicate Bridge. Don and Judy traveled all over the United States playing bridge.
In 2001 Don and Judy adopted her grandchildren: Randy, Jamie and Brian Tripp. He loved to attend their sporting events and was proud of all they have accomplished so far.
Don’s children also blessed him with many grandchildren. Richard Newman had three children, Ricky Newman, Felicia French and Jessica Ronan. Steve had two children, Austin Newman and Georgia Newman. Clayton had two children, Ashley Rasmussen and Colton Newman. Shannon had two sons, Devin and Jordan Tiger. Don also claimed Judy’s other grandson, Shaun Willey as his own.
Don has been blessed with three great grandchildren, Ashton Willey, Shaun’s son, Chase Ronan, Jessica’s son and Hannah Tiger, Jordan’s daughter.
Don was a wonderful father and grandfather. He spent his entire life in service to others and will be greatly missed.
Those who preceded Don in death include his parents, Ivan and Effie Newman; brothers, Stanley Clayton Newman (age 5) and James Allison Newman (founder of Jimmy’s Egg); children, Alicia Janell Newman (age 2) and Richard Ellis Newman (age 46).
