Darrell Hankey

August 9, 1932 — March 17, 2013

Funeral service for Darrell D. Hankey, Amorita, Oklahoma, will be Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., at the Riverside Church of Christ in Burlington, Oklahoma. Ray Hull of Waynoka and Jeffrey Keele of Burlington will officiate. Burial will be in the Byron-Amorita Cemetery. Family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Viewing will also be Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Darrell was born August 9, 1932 and departed this life to be with his Lord on March 17, 2013. He was born and raised on the family farm northeast of Amorita to Floyd and Bertha Alexander Hankey.

Darrell attended school at Amorita , graduating in 1950. On November 14, 1953, he married Verla Smith at her parents’ home northeast of Amorita. They were united in marriage by Minister Hartsell Johnson. In 1953 Darrell was drafted into the service and left for the army on December 1, 1953, which was Verla’s birthday. In May 1954, after high school graduation, she joined Darrell in Fairbanks, Alaska, where they spent their next year of marriage. In August, 1955, when Rick was six weeks old, they returned from Alaska to the Amorita area to help with her dad’s farming operation. In August 1957, shortly after Darrell was dismissed from the army, Dale was born in Cherokee, Oklahoma. Darrell lived and farmed northeast of Amorita until his retirement. In November 2011 he decided to reside at the Kiowa District Manor in Kiowa, Kansas. Darrell enjoyed his time at the manor and was a wonderful friend to all the residents and staff.

Darrell was a devoted farmer and loved the outdoors. He always had a kind and compassionate word for every one and was always ready to tell the good news of Jesus whether through teaching bible classes or personal bible study. He was a member of the Amorita Church of Christ and the Burlington Church of Christ. He served on the Byron-Amorita Cemetery Board, the USDA Community ASC Committee and was a Burlington FFA honorary chapter member.

He is survived by two sons, Rick Hankey and wife, Beverly of Amorita, Oklahoma, Dale Hankey and wife, Patty of Burlington, Oklahoma; and three grandchildren, Lindsey Callison and husband, Kyle of Byron, Oklahoma; Seth Hankey of Amorita, Oklahoma and Trevor Hankey of Burlington, Oklahoma. He is also survived by two sisters Rowena Grigg and Janet McCafferty; and a host of friends and family.

Those that preceded him in death were his wife, Verla Hankey; his brother, Ray Dean Hankey and his parents.
