Bernie Arganbright

April 18, 1942 — December 16, 2020

Cherokee, OK

Bernie Arganbright, a Cherokee resident, left her earthly home at the age of 78 on December 16, 2020, in Alva.  Graveside services will be held Tuesday, December 22, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at the Cherokee Municipal Cemetery Pavilion with Brother Tom Cooksey officiating.  Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Cherokee.  www.lanmanmemorials.com  Facebook: Lanman Funeral Home Inc.

Bernadette Jean Hatfield was born in Anthony, Kansas to William Benjamin Hatfield and Martha Charlene Clark Hatfield on April 18, 1942.  Bernie, as she was known to family and friends, was raised in Caldwell, Kansas until her senior year of high school when she and her family moved to Alva, Oklahoma.

Bernie and Donald “Butch” Arganbright were united in marriage on January 26, 1963 in Cherokee.  They resided in Cherokee all 57 years of their marriage.  To this union two children were born: Donnell Elaine and Kendall Blaine.  She joined First Christian Church in Cherokee shortly after their marriage.

Bernie worked several jobs until she went to work in the mid 1970’s at Cherokee Mini Mart, later changed to Cherokee Jiffy Trip.  She quickly became the manager of the store.  Almost everyone that lived in Cherokee or came for a visit stopped at Mini Mart for snacks or gas.  Bernie enjoyed getting to know many people throughout the area and visiting with them, especially about sports.  She particularly enjoyed visiting with the school kids.  She would tease them as much as they would tease her.  She eventually moved into the office and retired from Hammer-Williams in 2004.

Bernie was an avid OU fan until they played her beloved KU Jayhawks men’s basketball.  She enjoyed shopping (never missing a good sale), playing cards, Mexican dominoes, and Yahtzee with her family and friends, and going to casinos to gamble.  The last couple of years she enjoyed playing Bingo at Beadles Nursing Home and acquired quite the collection of necklaces and stuffed animals.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Bernie is survived by her husband, Butch; her daughter, Donnell Gibson (Carl), and her son, Kendall Arganbright.  Bernie has six grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and enjoyed going to their activities, especially sporting events, as they were growing up: Matt Gibson (Desiree’), Leslie McGuire (Brandon), Kelsi Claflin (Malachi), Cale Gibson (Rachel), Mackenzie Arganbright, and Donnita Arganbright.  She has ten great-grandchildren: Taylor, Quentin, Baler, Addison, Zackery, Skyler, Tyla, Chloe, Mason, and Cole, and one great-great-grandson, Jace.  She is also survived by an aunts and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

The family asks that memorials be made to Beadles Nursing Home Activity Fund through Lanman Funeral Home.  The family would like to thank Beadles Nursing Home staff for all the love and care they provided, especially the last nine months.  She loved each of them dearly.
