Cherokee-Funeral service for Barbara Wessels, 66, will be Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church in Cherokee with Rev. Tom Stanley officiating. Burial will follow at Cherokee Municipal Cemetery.
Barbara Burkhart Wessels was born on October 23, 1946 in Lakehurst, New Jersey to Eugene and Adah Smith Burkhart and passed from this life on July 6, 2013 in Wichita, Kansas.
She grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas where she attended W.B. Ray High School and Del Mar College.
She met Donald Wessels while visiting her grandparents in Cherokee, Oklahoma. Two weeks later Donald drove to Corpus Christi, and they were engaged the next day. They got married the following Easter Sunday in 1966.
They had four children: Jerry, Julie, Laura, and LaDonna.
While Donald was in the Army, Barbara worked as a secretary in Boston and Washington D.C.
Moving back to the farm in Cherokee, Barbara sang in the choir and worked as secretary at First Christian Church for many years. She loved to play the piano at home.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Charles and infant daughter, Julie.
Survivors include her husband, Donald; her son, Jerry Wessels and wife, Shanndee and their children, Kolt and Lindzee; daughters, Laura Wade and husband, Winn and son, Harley and Ladonna Thomas and her son, Quinton.
Memorials may be given to First Christian Church Youth through the funeral home.
